A white border runs around the photograph. It gives the image room to breathe and leaves space for a mat and frame, as galleries have long done with fine-art prints.

The fine-art print is made on Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta, a 325 g/m² paper with a barium sulphate coating.

  • Darkroom Character: The baryta coating gives the paper the silk sheen and fine texture of a classic darkroom print, with smooth tones from the gold of the frame into the dark cabin wall.
  • Razor-Sharp Details: Pigment inks on bright white paper keep the texture of the clouds and the lines of the wing sharp.
  • Ready to Frame: A 2 cm white border on acid-free, museum-quality paper. Shipped unframed, ready for the frame of your choice.

Four sizes in the original 2:3 ratio: 20 × 30, 40 × 60, 60 × 90 and 80 × 120 cm. Fine-art prints ship unframed. Acrylic glass arrives ready to hang. The signed edition, Positive Climb, comes in 80 × 120 cm only.

Shipping is included in Germany and the rest of the EU. Printed to order in Germany and shipped by parcel service. A fine-art print in 80 × 120 cm takes about 9 working days within Germany and 11 to other EU countries. All countries and special cases are on the Shipping page. Safety
Acrylic glass prints are heavy, especially at 60 × 90 and 80 × 120 cm. Hang them with screws and wall plugs suited to your wall and to the weight. Carry and unpack them with both hands and hold them by the edges. Keep packaging material away from small children.

Care
Dust acrylic glass with a soft, dry microfibre cloth; for marks, use a little clean water. No alcohol, glass cleaner or abrasive cloths. Hold fine-art paper by its edges. Hang prints out of direct sunlight and away from heaters.

The story behind the frame

A few minutes after take-off from Munich, the Embraer E190 to Frankfurt climbs out above the clouds and the cabin changes colour. The sun is almost down, just outside the right edge of the window, and it turns the window frame gold.

Below the wing the cloud tops are still piled high, lit from the side. Higher up, a thin veil of cloud holds the last of the light, and a contrail crosses the sky. The wing is the only hard line in the picture, its winglet pointing up into the sunset.

The details

This was the way home. Earlier that day I had been on the flight deck of an Airbus A350-900 from Palma de Mallorca to Munich on a photo assignment; Thrust is from that flight. For the last leg to Frankfurt I took the window seat just behind the wing. The Embraer E190 has a wingspan of 28.72 metres; the upturned tip is a winglet, which cuts drag, and the two pods under the wing are the flap-track fairings. It is a print for everyone who asks for the window seat, and I always do.
